Beyond the War Memorials

With the 100th anniversary of the end of ‘The Great War’, on 11th November 1918, approaching we would like to honour the men who gave their lives during the conflict, highlighting their courage, bravery and ultimate sacrifice in defending King and country.

Beyond the War Memorials website follows up the successful publication of Sefton at War by gathering in one place information on the memorials located within Sefton, mapping them and providing an insight into the where the brave men identified on the memorials lived or where born; along with any other interesting information revealed by the diligent research of local school children, volunteers and researchers.

Memorials

During the years that followed 1918, War Memorials to commemorate the great loss of life and heroism shown by individuals and communities, were built across Sefton.

There are 10 Civic memorials in Sefton, honouring a total of 3,790 men, who died in World War One. Other memorials were erected in schools, churches and places of work across the borough. In Sefton, 162 War Memorials were erected to honour the heroes of World War One.

Brave men

One in four of the male population joined up to fight in World War One.


For those who enjoy a real World War I history lesson into a charming puzzle game then Valiant Hearts is the game for you. The game (available on Xbox, PS4 and PC platforms) was developed by Ubisoft Montpellier and published by Ubisoft and is inspired by letters written during World War I and has four characters on the battlefield who help a young German soldier find his love in this story about survival, sacrifice and friendship.
